Group members
rendezvous in Manila, proceed overland toBatangas Port and ferry
to Puerto Galera on Mindoro Island. Continue overland south to Mansalay
and trek into the mountains of southern Mindoro to rendezvous with
hunters of the remote, primitive Mangyan tribe. With porter support,
group members accompany tribesmen and their hunting dogs on a wild
boar hunt. On a typical hunt the dogs will corner a large and dangerous
wild boar and keep the animal engaged until the hunters arrive.
The men close in and dispatch the boar at very close quarters with
their spears. It's an exciting pursuit and dangerous finale, with
the hunters often injured by the enraged boar. The hunt is not just
sport, but an essential survival activity that provides food for
the members of the tribe. Five to eight hours of moderate to strenuous
hiking is necessary to access the tribe, with tent camping nights
in the forest. Return to Manila and fly to Puerto Princesa on Palawan
Island. Head overland to the departure point for the trek into the
ancestral forest home of the cave-dwelling Tau't Batu. The tribe
hunts birds and bats with blowguns, wild pigs with spears and they
fish underground rivers. Camping nights in the forest with local
guides and porters.
