China & East Asia Journeys with

Group members rendezvous in Tokyo and travel by train to Yamanouchi in Honshu's Nagano Prefecture. Walk in to see the Jigokudani Park snow monkeys—hot spring-loving wild macaques that are the northernmost population of non-human primates in the world. Fly toSapporo on the northern island of Hokkaido to attend the annual Sapporo Ice Festival. A kilometre-long stretch of walkway in the center of town is lined with elaborate ice sculptures, some more than 100' tall. Head by private vehicle to visit Japan's fair-skinned, blue-eyed indigenous Ainu in Nibutani village and surroundings, then by train reach the wetlands of Kushiro-Shitsugen National Park. Observe the winter courtship of endangered Japanese Cranes on their dancing grounds, and in sanctuaries near Tsurui Village. Travel by rail to Abashiri in eastern Hokkaido and cruise the Okhotsk Sea in an ice-breaker, plowing through a vast layer of blue drift ice (ryuhyo) that is a February phenomenon. Return to Tokyo for homeward-bound flights. Accommodations are in Japanese-style minshuku and ryokan (guesthouses & small inns).
