TRIP LEG 1: MYANMAR'S BEACHES, TEMPLES & CHIN STATE

THE DAY-BY-DAY BRIEF

DAY 1: Rendezvous in Bangkok and fly to Yangon, Burma. Tour the Shwedagon Pagoda this afternoon. Night in Yangon.

DAY 2: Depart by air for Bagan, then by 4WD head 100 miles west into Chin State, visiting Chin villages enroute. Night in Mindat.

DAY 3: Attend National Chin Day; night in Mindat.

DAY 4:
Observe Chin Day celebrations and rituals, hike on 10,110' Mt. Victoria in Natma Taung National Park, and witness tribal rituals in Chin village near Mindat. Night in Mindat.

DAY 5: Drive to Bagan and begin touring the more than 1,000 payas and stupas in the temple complex. Optional hot-air balloon flight over Bagan and the Irawaddy River plain. Night in Bagan.

DAY 6: Watch the sunrise over the Bagan temples then fly to Mandalay. Tour the city and life along the Irawaddy River. Night in Mandalay.

7: Depart for Yangon by air and drive to Ngwe Saung Beach on the Bay of Bengal. Night at Ngwe Saung.


DAY 8: Aquatic sports this morning at Birds and Lion Islands on the Bay of Bengal. Return to Yangon via Pathein town. Night in Yangon.

DAY 9:
Transfer to Yangon Airport in the morning to board flights to Bangkok and beyond.

    Temple in Rangoon (Yangon), perhaps

    of Bagan temples on the Irawaddy Plain;

TRIP LEG 2: LAID-BACK LAOS

THE DAY-BY-DAY BRIEF

DAY 1: Rendezvous in Bangkok and fly to Luang Prabang on the Mekong River, arriving early afternoon. Tour the town with its abundance of Lao-style Buddhist temples. Night in Luang Prabang.

DAY 2: Temple and market touring in Luang Prabang, then up the Mekong River to ancient riverside cave temples and a Lao village famous for its rice whiskey. Night in Luang Prabang.

DAY 3: Day in and around Luang Prabang: from the National Musuem to the top of 300'-high Phu Si Hill and on to Khmu villages and the Kuang Si waterfalls south of town. Night in Luang Prabang.


DAY 4:
Breakfast, then a 4-hr drive southeast through the mountains to Phonsavanh at the edge of the Plain of Jars. Explore several groups of the massive, mysterious stone jars on the Plain. Night in Phonsavanh.

DAY 5: Morning on the Plain of Jars then overland to Xieng Khuang. Depart by air to Vientiane, the capital city of Laos on the Mekong and the hub through which all in-country flights cycle on their way to elsewhere. Temple touring in town and night in Vientiane.

DAY 6: Depart by Lao Airlines to Luang Nam Tha near the China border. Explore on foot and by vehicle surrounding hill tribe villages of Khmu, Lenten, Black Tai, Hmong and Lao. Night in Luang Nam Tha.

7: Morning visit to the Luang Nam Tha market. Visit Hmong villages and other tribals as time permits. Night in Luang Nam Tha.

DAY
8:
Depart for Vientiane by air in late morning and upon arrival connect with onward flights.

TRIP LEG 3: VIETNAM'S HILL TRIBES, COAST & THE MEKONG DELTA

THE DAY-BY-DAY BRIEF

DAY 1: Rendezvous in Hanoi with remainder of day at leisure. Water puppet show this evening. Night in Hanoi.

DAY 2: Tour the city: Hoan Kiem Lake & Tortoise Pagoda, Dong Xuan Market, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum& Museum, former "Hanoi Hilton" prison, snake-farm village, other sites. Night in Hanoi.

DAY 3: Trip up thePearl River in the mountains south of Hanoi to the Perfume Pagoda. Night in Hanoi.

DAY 4:
Overland to NW Vietnam and hill town of Sapa with Montagnard village visits enroute. Night in Sapa.

DAY 5: Hike and drive to Hmong, Dzao and other tribal villages & markets near Sapa. Night train back toHanoi.

DAY 6: By car and ferry to Cat Ba Island Natl Park in Halong Bay. Cruise on local fishing boat among hundreds of karst formations as crew works the nets and hauls in the catch. Night in Cat Ba town.

DAY 7: Beach time on Cat Ba then Halong Bay ferry cruise to shore. Return to Hanoi, fly to Hué. Niight Hué.

DAY 8: Tour Hué: the Citadel, Thien Mu Pagoda, Royal Tombs of the Nguyen Dynasty, other sites. Night Hué.

DAY 9: Fly to Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon) and tour the city: Jade Emperor, Giac Lam & Xai Loi Pagodas; Reunification Palace; old U.S. Embassy; cyclo run through the old city; other sites. Night HoChi Minh City.

DAY 10: Explore the Ben Thanh market, the Viet Cong's Cu Chi Tunnel complex outside the city, and Temple of Caodai in Tay Ninh town. Night in HoChi Minh City.

DAY 11: Go by hydrofoil down the Saigon River to Vung Tau on the South China Sea. Beach time plus cycling the Vung Tau Peninsula. Night in HoChi Minh City.

DAY 12: Loop drive through the Mekong Delta to Vinh Long with enroute village visits and Mekong River boat trip. Night in HoChi Minh City.

DAY13: Transfer to airport for onward departures.
