Calidex
has block chartered the 46-passenger M/V Grigoriy Mikheev,
a former Russian oceanographic research vessel converted for comfortable
cruising. Built in Finland in 1990, the 2,000 ton, 210 ft. long Mikheev
cruises at 14 knots. The ship is equipped with an ice-strengthened
hull, anti-roll system, a fleet of outboard-powered Zodiacs, satellite
communications gear and the latest GPS navigational aids. Accommodations
are in outside twin and superior cabins with desk, window, wash basin
and ample storage space. Most cabins have a private toilet and shower;
a library, infirmary, bar/lounge and dining room/lecture room serve
as public areas.
Mikheevs enthusiastic Russian captain and crew of 20
have wide experience in Antarctic waters. International chefs and
knowledgeable naturalists and lecturers round out the staff. On deck,
our naturalists provide an on-going interpretation of the surrounding
wildlife and natural history, drawing on a wealth of Southern Ocean
and Antarctic familiarity.
The Mikheev is superbly qualified to deliver a safe, intimate
small-group expeditionary experience. "Small-group" is the
key to quality encounters, both human and non-human. Compared to larger
ships that board a hundred or more passengers, sailing on the Mikheev
is a special pleasure.
