Africa & Indian Ocean Journeys with
The Libyan Fezzan: be prepared to immerse yourself in desert landscapes so stunning, so alien and seemingly extraterrestrial, that you’ll never forget them. Twisted rock towers snake up to the sky from rippling desert, multicolored lakes completely out of context hide among monster sand dunes, and in the background the mysterious Tuaregs and their camels move across the horizon. Libya is also a treasure chest of spectacular Phoenician and Roman ruins that majestically populate the desert sands. Huge amphitheaters that could host today’s largest performances, marble colonnades winding past ancient temples—collectively they are the world’s most intact remains of Roman civilization. UNESCO World Heritage Sites are commonplace in Libya, and we visit at least four. Via 4-wheel drive Toyota Land Cruisers and on foot into wadis that have seen few human footprints, we’ll explore rock art more than 12,000 years old and experience desert panoramas that have no counterpart anywhere in the world. A support team of six experienced local folks will keep us fed, watered and warm as we cover a grand swath of Libya's vast southwestern desert region. Five comfortable camping nights and four hotel nights.
